Welcome to blue!

Q: What is "blue"?
A: Blue is the theme camp that we've registered for Burning Man 2000.

Q: Who will be camping at blue?
A: We have 10 or 20 friends going to burning man, most of whom we expect to be part of blue. Here's the list.

Q: What will blue be like?
A: Blue. Our camp will be blue. All blue. Everyone and everything blue. We will have blue cars and blue tents, a blue truck, and a blue shade structure. We will wear blue clothes eat blue food. We will pray to the great Blue goddess. We will entertain our guests with a grand croquet course with all blue balls and mallets, and five foot tall blue wickets. We will play blue four-square on our blue four-square court with random passers-by who will stun us with their chromatic diversity!

Q: What will it look like?
A: Hopefully it will be quite visually striking. Kind of like all the red you see in these red photos, only more blue:

Q: Can I help work on blue?
Yup, that'd be great! Send mail to blue@gumption.org and we can talk more about it.

Q: Can I be a part of blue at Burning Man, even if I don't help work on it before?
You bet! Please RSVP to blue@gumption.org to let us know you're coming. And keep in mind that camping at blue will impact your packing list a little. For starters you will need to have a blue tarp to cover your car. You can get that for about $20 at Home Depot or most camping stores. You'll also need some sort of blue cover for your tent, and blue costuming for you and your bike.

Q: Does all my stuff really need to be blue?
Yup, that's the one big rule at blue camp. Everything that's visible to other people needs to be blue -- either naturally blue, or painted blue, or covered in blue tarps or blue fabric. Cars, tents, bikes, ice chests, chairs, clothing, shade structures, plates, water jugs, etc. We'll bring some spare tarps and paint for people who show up in need of a little extra help with last-minute blueification. Feel free to bring other non-blue things, but while they're at blue camp they'll need to be packed away out of sight.

Q: Why did you pick blue?
We wanted to pick a project that would:
  • be cheap and easy for people to take part in
  • be something you can decide to do at the last minute, with almost no preparation
  • accommodate as many people as wanted to join us this year
  • scale up in future years, and have the potential to someday be amazingly huge
  • have a sensational visual impact
  • leave ample opportunity for individuals and small groups to undertake their own projects and do their own thing within the context of the general theme (e.g. give out blue kool-aid, or a make a blue lighthouse, or stage skits about of a blue nature)

Once we'd settled on the idea of uni-color theme, we considered a bunch of specific colors: red and yellow and orange and blue and hot pink. After doing just a little bit of shopping research we realized that sticking with red or yellow or blue would make the most sense, because most products don't come in less common colors like orange and pink. Red or yellow would both have been cool, but we ended up choosing blue simply because blue tarps are really cheap and widely available, whereas getting some kind of red or yellow covering for a car or a tent could take a lot more time and money.
