blue projects

We've got a good start on organizing all the stuff we want to have to build blue camp.  Here's the list of project ideas and where we stand on them...

luminol

You know those little chemical glow stick things that you can get for about a dollar?  "Luminol" is the chemical inside that makes them glow. It's non-toxic and if you're brave you can cut open the glow stick and pour the stuff on your clothing.  It makes your clothing glow for hours in the coolest way, although it does kinda smell and it may stain the fabric so you only want to do it with clothes you don't care about.  We're getting a zillion glow sticks so if you want to go out at night with glowing clothes we'll be all set up for it.

  • DONE
  • glow sticks (zillions)
  • pruning shears
  • cheese cloth & filters
  • squirt bottle
  • latex gloves
shade structure

We want to have some kind of big blue communal shade structure to hang out it, have meals in, or whatever. Bobby is working on designing and building it for us.

  • bobby is all over it
  • tarps
  • rebar
  • galvanized conduit
  • tension lines
  • etc.
croquet course

The plan is to make a big 40 foot by 80 foot croquet course with giant 5 foot tall wickets and end stakes. We'll have a bunch of blue mallets and blue balls and a sign that tells people how to play. We've already got all the materials. The next step is to make big painted cardboard cut-outs for the wickets.  Each one can be different, and each one can be a work of art -- maybe we'll have a 5' tall magic blue mushroom, and a dolphin, and a dragon, or whatever way inspires you. If we have "Blueification Day" soon you can come over and make one of the wickets.

  • need to make sign
  • need to make wickets
  • need to make end post tops
  • sign with rules
  • croquet mallets

    • galvanized conduit
    • fabric
    • metal T-joints

"BLUE" stop sign

At the edge of the camp, along the road, we plan to have a "BLUE" sign. The "BLUE" sign will look like a normal traffic STOP sign, except that it will be blue instead of red, and it will say "BLUE" instead of "STOP".  Here's a drawing of the idea. We already have the wooden stand and pole for the sign, and Ellen is working on the sign itself.

  • ellen is all over it
  • sign itself -- (don't yet have)
  • the "BLUE" letters (if the sign is 30" inches the letters should be about 10")

four-square court

Along with the croquet course we want to have a four-square court, both for us and for anybody who happens by.  The four-square court should have blue rope or something to mark the edges of the squares, and the blue version of those big rubber four-square balls.  Maybe a few balls, and a staked-down sack for the balls to live in so they don't roll away in the wind.  And maybe a sign that says "4-square" and tells people how to play. The four-square court should be easy to make, but so far nobody has put any work into it, so feel free to claim this project as your own.  Extra credit if you can figure out how to keep the balls from bouncing too far away -- maybe surround the court with some kind of net fencing?

  • rope
  • balls
  • net ball bag -- (don't yet have)
  • sign with rules -- (don't yet have)

  • body paint
  • henna
  • hair dye
  • food coloring
reality distortion booth

The idea here is to make some kind of booth about the size and shape of one of those English phone booths.  Instead of glass the booth would have transparent blue plastic, so that when you're standing inside the booth the whole world looks blue.  It should be pretty easy to make a cheap version of this with just 4 pieces of rebar, 4 pieces of steel conduit, and a bunch of transparent blue plastic taped in place.  Plus maybe a sign so people know what it is.

  • almost no work done
  • rebar stakes -- (don't yet have)
  • galvanized conduit -- (don't yet have)
  • plastic wrap -- (don't yet have)
  • sign -- (don't yet have)

  • giant blue coloring book -- (don't yet have)
  • giant blue crayons -- (don't yet have)
word art

You know those word magnets you can get for your refrigerator so people come along and make little poems?  The Burning Man version of this is to just use shingles (or bits of planks) spread out on the ground, with one word painted on each.  Of course for blue camp we would want blue shingles, but that's an easy painting job.  This is a good low effort project if you're looking for a last minute way to contribute.  Here's a photo of the idea -- http://users.intercomm.com/gws/cgi-bin/O313.jpg

  • almost no work done
  • shingles
  • list of words -- (don't yet have)
